Solar Boiler – Domestic Hot Water

For solar hot water heating the Solar Boiler is second to none. Providing up to 65% of your annual domestic hot water needs this unit has an immediate impact on the size of your bill. Hot water heating is usually the second highest energy expenditure in a household, the highest for some households. The solar boiler is nearly maintenance free as it requires the occasional glycol top up. It has year round operation and even the pump in 

the unit is powered by the sun via a solar PV panel that allows you to have hot water even when the power is out, so long as you still have water pressure.

Super Insulation Techniques

All exterior walls are insulated with R20 Fiberglass insulation. The exterior walls are also covered with 1-1/2” rigid styrofoam insulation providing a wall assembly with a total R value of R-27.

Attic spaces are insulated to R-60 with blown in cellulose insulation.

Floor slabs are insulated with 1-1/2” Rigid insulation providing an R value close to 7.

Triple Glazed Windows – Low E

All windows on the South side are double glazed to work with the passive solar system. These windows have and rating of R-4. 

The North, West and East sides have triple glazed windows rated at R-6.

Hybrid Fuel Options

Passive Solar Heating

The 411:

The sun is a massive generator which produces more than enough energy to heat all our homes. 

Solar energy is clean, renewable, and readily available in our geographic location during the winter heating season. 

How it works:

Passive solar heating design allows the sun’s energy to enter the home during daylight hours. 

Heat is stored in the floor slab and wall assemblies during the day and is released back into the home during the night. The air handler and 

distribution system balances the temperature in the home and circulates warmer air to cooler areas of the home. Proper passive solar 

design is the art of balancing solar heat gains and building losses to achieve optimum performance. A well-designed passive solar home can get 1/3 to 1/2 of its heating energy from the sun at no cost. The remaining heating requirements are handled by a back-up system which can be traditional electric heating, oil heating or biomass stove.

Consolair Solar Max

"An area of approximately 1000 sq. ft. can be heated to a comfortable temperature with just 15 minutes of sun per hour."

The 411:

A direct air heating system that works with ANY existing heating system with no retrofitting required. 

How it works:

It simply pulls the cold air from the floor and spits it back out at the top of the room. This seems counterproductive at first but with a flow rate of 90 cubic feet per minute the Cansolair will pull the warm air down as it draws the cold air in for heating. This creates a more 

consistent heat from the top of the ceiling to the floor as traditional systems tend to not cause the air to flow. An area of approximately 1000 sq. ft. can be heated to a comfortable temperature with just 15 minutes of sun per hour. It should be noted that the Cansolair is a s

upplemental heating system and is not intended to be the sole component in a heating system but to provide FREE heat when the sun is shining. The average payback on this unit has been set at 3-5 years and is getting better every time the price of oil goes up. The Cansolair 

Solar Max is recommended for Type 3 and Type 4 designs with full basements where the passive solar system is not available.

Oil Fired Boiler

"The latest generation oil fired boilers now enjoy efficiencies in the 87-90% range making them an efficient heating appliance."

While not at the top of the green energy ladder they are still a good choice for some consumers.

Conventional Electric Baseboard Heating

For some customers more comfortable with electric heat, traditional electric baseboard heating is also an option. The additional insulation enhancements will allow economical heating of the home.

Biomass/Pellet Stove

"Available in two sizes these stoves can heat the entire home when properly installed."

The 411:

The ability to burn whichever fuel is cheap and available makes this product an easy choice when compared to a standard pellet stove. In addition to the savings benefits, you will be supporting the local economy instead of sending all of your home heating dollars off Island.

How it works:

Countryside multi-fuel stoves can burn a variety of fuels such as wood pellets, corn, barley, and other agri-fuels. Available in two sizes these stoves can heat the entire home when properly installed.
